Drayton Manor – a very English Amusement Park.
My first visit to Drayton Manor Park in the Midlands was as a young child in the early 70’s and again much later while working on my Zoo project where I photographed an amazing Black Leopard and a Sumatran Tiger.
I really like to revisit places I’ve photographed in the past to see what has changed so I returned once again to explore the zoo, only to find they had massively expanded the amusement park while the zoo remained familiar and largely as it was a decade ago.
With many of the rides closed and in flattened light, the park had a curious atmosphere and shares much of the quirkiness, oddities and real sense of homegrown ‘Englishness’ that you would normally associate with old-school seaside towns.
These are just a handful of observations from my most recent visit and possibly the beginnings of another project to tie in with my Zoo work and Luna Park series from Coney Island.
